The weakest link: Ranganathan from Rome "trying not to copy" by Anne Robinson

After being one of the UK's most popular trivia quizzes for over a decade, viewers said goodbye to the weakest link (or perhaps "goodbye") in 2012.

Terrifying Quiz of Knowledge led by the slightly scary Anne Robinson across over 1,500 episodes. Their steely personality and distaste for candidates are burned into the identity of the weakest link, and the public applies to the program knowing they will be ridiculed.

Which begs how to approach a new version of the show in an era of BeKind hashtags and rising mental health awareness. To start over, it also has to be reinvented - starting with a new host in the form of comedian Romesh Ranganathan.

"This is the first thing that gets my wife excited," he said before continuing the show. "He couldn't believe it, and it was the weakest relationship, everyone knew that, and everyone was happy to see it when it worked.

Ranganathan's approach will be very different from Robinson's. In today's climate, a presenter cannot treat an athlete like Robinson - which he admitted earlier this year. He chose competitors based on their appearance, occupation, or lifestyle back then.

These days, the crime queen has toned down her new role as host of Channel 4's Countdown - but only slightly. "He's not the most cuddly person in the world, but now it's just another show, and he's made it his own," program mathematician Rachel Riley recently told Lorraine.

Before restarting the weakest link, the more spoiled Ranganathan admitted, "Anne is great at it, and she is a big part of why the show is as popular as she is.

"But I don't think there's any point in imitating or being like that.

"The fact is the format is bulletproof; the tests are unique. So when you do it, you get the weakest link, you get what you're looking for, and I'll do it my way, it has a taste difference - Ann, bring your taste buds, and I'll get your own I.
