Wadhwan City Bird Atlas 2026 to Launch with Expert Guidance and Citizen Science Initiative

Ahmedabad University is set to spearhead one of Gujarat’s most significant citizen science-driven biodiversity initiatives with the launch of the Wadhwan City Bird Atlas 2026 on June 11, 2026. The project, the first bird atlas for the Saurashtra region and the second in Gujarat, aims to create a comprehensive database of bird species across Wadhwan City while encouraging active public participation in scientific data collection and conservation efforts.

Organised under the theme “Citizen Science for Nature, Knowledge for Conservation,” the initiative seeks to strengthen biodiversity research through community engagement. The inaugural programme will bring together policymakers, bird experts, researchers, and citizens to mark the official launch of the atlas.

Registration is scheduled from 4:30 pm to 5:00 pm, followed by the inauguration ceremony from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The event will begin with a welcome address by Devvratsinh Mori and a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, marking the formal commencement of the project.

Chief Guest Shri Arjunbhai Modhwala, Cabinet Minister for Forest and Environment, Government of Gujarat, will attend the event along with Shri Jagdishbhai Makwana, MLA of Wadhwan Constituency and Deputy Chief Whip of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Shri Bhavanisinhji Mori, former Member of the State Board for Wildlife and former Wildlife Warden of Surendranagar District, will also be present.

Technical sessions from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm will prepare participants for field surveys and data collection activities. Renowned birder Prasad Ganpule will conduct a session on bird identification in the Saurashtra landscape, while Divin Venu will explain how to use the eBird platform for systematic data entry and bird monitoring.

Dr. Jitesh Jhawar’s session, titled “Defining the Skeleton,” will provide a detailed overview of the WCBA framework, including survey methodologies, grid assignments, and operational protocols. The session is designed to equip volunteers and participants with the knowledge required to contribute effectively to this landmark biodiversity documentation and conservation initiative.
