Two Gujarat Congress MLAs resign, ahead of Rajya Sabha elections on June 19.

On Wednesday, Congress suffered a massive setback after at least two of the party’s MLAs resigned ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections on June 19. MLA of Karjan Akshay Patel and Kaprada’s MLA Jitu Chaudhary have given in their resignations as potentially a third MLA of the Congress may also be on his way. This setback can interestingly turn Rajya Sabha elections into a close contest as rumors surfaced that a third MLA could also resign.

Congress failed to reach its MLAs:
A senior AICC leader was quoted,” Two I can confirm, third, we are trying to confirm.”  The leader further added,” It was expected. It is Gujarat, if BJP can do this sort of thing in other states, then Gujarat is their home ground.”
Congress leaders frantically attempted to get in touch with the said MLAs last night after they got the wind of the trouble last night itself, the leaders failed to reach the MLAs.

BJP in pole position:
The departure of the MLAs have weakened Congress’ bid to win two out of four seats in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. This comes as another setback as in March of this year, 5 Congress MLAs resigned, bringing their tally down to 68 seats. After the fresh desertions, Congress will find it difficult to win with a prospect of a third MLA resigning looming large.
BJP is in a pole position to win the seats as it holds 103 members in the House and have fielded a former Congress leader as a third candidate – Narhari Amin, just to rub salt into Congress’ deep wounds.
