Tom Cruise bursts into tears after receiving a surprise Cannes award

Key Takeaways:

On Wednesday, Tom Cruise was the star of the Cannes Film Festival, making a big entrance with fighter planes flying overhead and receiving a standing ovation from the audience during the showing of his film Top Gun: Maverick. Tom was moved to tears when he realized how well his action picture was received at the screening.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the Tom Gun: Maverick team's entrance comprised eight fighter jets flying over the event, emitting red and blue smoke to match the French flag's colors.

After spending several minutes posing for photos with fans and signing autographs, the actor joined his colleagues for the screening. According to the newspaper, the audience gave a six-minute standing ovation following the film's showing, which reduced Tom to tears.

He was given another honor before the screening, led by festival director Thierry Fremaux, after taking part in a MasterClass Conversation in the 1,000-seat Debussy Theatre earlier. Thierry offered remarks (in French) and launched a 13-minute clip reel that featured every entry in Tom's filmography in honor of his long-running profession at the center of international pop culture.

When Thierry announced that Tom Cruise would receive a Palme d'Or from the festival, Tom was surprised. He was virtually dumbfounded, and all he could say was "wow." He witnessed yet another standing ovation following the news, which was everything from routine.

Tom walked the red carpet with Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, as well as co-stars Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Lewis Pullman at the screening.

Pooja Hegde and TV actor Helly Shah strolled the red carpet in designer costumes as they attended the film's screening.
