The Grammy Awards have been criticized for calling Virgil Ablo a hip-hop fashion designer

"Imagine being the creative director of one of the most prestigious fashion houses globally and being branded a 'hip hop fashion designer,'" wrote one user.

While the 2022 Grammys wowed everyone with some stunning fashion moments and shows, it's also been in the limelight for more than 1 reason. After being asked not to include the late singer Lata Mangeshkar in the "In Memoriam" segment, he has been criticized for belittling famed designer Virgil Ablo as a "hip-hop fashion designer" during the tribute.

The Academy of Recording Arts paid tribute to the late Male Artistic Director Louis Vuitton and founder of Off-White, who died in November at the age of 41 after a long battle with cancer.

The late designer was also nominated for a Grammy in 2011 for his work on the cover of Watch the Throne. Apart from creating work recognized in the fashion industry, he also works as a DJ, producer, visual artist, and engineer.

As expected, the Grammy Awards didn't sit well with many, who took to social media to express their displeasure that they spoiled much of Ablo's talent.

"Imagine being the creative director of one of the most prestigious fashion houses globally and being called a 'hip hop fashion designer.' Unfortunately, @RecordingAcad does better," wrote one user.

Another user tweeted, "Virgil's list of achievements in fashion, art, architecture, music, etc., is longer than most Grammy people combined. I think it's crazy that they think it's a good idea to shorten your life as a "hip hop fashion designer"! "To belittle Virgil Ablo as a "hip hop fashion designer" is disgusting behavior. Whoever's in charge of the Grammy Awards, you can't see the sky," one Twitter user wrote.
