The fourth wave of fear: China locks up 26 million people after a spike in Covid-19 cases
China has decided to lock down its largest city, Shanghai, with a population of more than 26 million, over record-breaking Covid-19 cases.
Amid dread of a possible 4TH wave of Covid-19 in India, China has decided to put its largest city, Shanghai, with more than 26 million people, on lockdown due to record coronavirus cases.
The city government said that a record 3,450 asymptomatic Covid-19 infections were reported in Shanghai on Sunday, accounting for nearly 70% of the national total, along with 50 symptomatic cases.
The sudden blockade announced by the Shanghai municipal government on Sunday will divide the city in two along the Huangpu River for about nine days to allow for phased testing. In addition, Shanghai's Pudong financial district and surrounding areas will be closed from Monday (March 28) to Friday as mass testing begins across the city, the local government said.
In the second phase of the blockade, the central city center west of the Huangpu River, which bisects the city, will begin its five-day siege on Friday. The Shanghai Public Safety Bureau said it would close bridges and tunnels across the river and concentrate toll gates in the city's eastern district on April 1. Similar restrictions will apply to areas west of the Huangpu River between April 1 and April 5.
On Sunday, the city government said it would also stop public transport, including transit services, in closed areas. He also ordered the cessation of work at businesses and factories, except those providing public services or delivering food.
