Grey's Anatomy recently celebrated its 400th episode, but the cast of the ABC medical drama isn't ready to put their scrubs away just yet.
On Thursday, some of the show's most popular cast members shared their thoughts on its impending end — and what it will look like when it does.
Chandra Wilson, who has portrayed Dr. Miranda Bailey for the past 18 seasons, told a source at the Grey's Anatomy 400th Episode Celebration in Hollywood, "We had thought of several endings, and they were like, 'Nope, that's not it."
"That isn't going to stop. And all of the possibilities... We played them as if the game was about to end, "she continued. "As a result, I'm no longer thinking about it. It's not going to happen!"
Camilla Luddington, who has played Jo Wilson since season 9, remarked, "It's hard to fathom it is closing now."
Kevin McKidd, who has played Dr. Owen Hunt since season 5, adds, "I don't know how this show finishes at this point." "We were all hoping this season to be the last. This season, I felt like we were all working towards it. However, the crowd appears to desire more."
"The difficulty is with a medical show since most TV shows struggle to keep going because their narrative or the structure of how they're telling tales becomes confusing," he explained. "Because fresh people are admitted to hospitals every day, medical programs have an unlimited supply of stories to tell. As a result, it's difficult to predict how things will turn out. I can say that it is now bigger than all of us."
Grey's Anatomy, the longest-running primetime medical drama series, received a 19th season order from ABC in January.
As per the press release acquired by the source, the Shondaland series will explore the ever-expanding world of contemporary medicine through the perspective of favorite returning and new characters in the upcoming season.
Krista Vernoff, executive producer and showrunner, will remain in charge.
"The global significance of Grey's Anatomy cannot be understated," Vernoff added. "The depth of connection people experience with these characters touches, and sometimes changes, hearts and minds worldwide. I'm looking ahead to working with our incredible writers to figure out where we go from here, and I'm grateful to Disney and ABC for allowing us to produce bold tales with genuine effect."
Shonda Rhimes added, "I could not have been more excited that we get to continue telling the tales of Meredith, Bailey, Richard, and all of the other doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial for another season." "This is a true credit to Krista Vernoff, the actors, staff, and all writers for keeping the audience guessing week after week. And it wouldn't be possible even without generations of devoted Grey's Anatomy viewers who have supported the show for so long."
Cast members have come and also gone throughout the years, with just Ellen Pompeo, Wilson, and James Pickens Jr. remaining for all 18 seasons, but the show's fan following has stayed strong.
Some famous characters, such as Kate Walsh as Addison Montgomery and Abigail Spencer as Megan Hunt, returned for the 18th season. Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew will reprise their roles as Jackson Avery as well as April Kepner in the season finale, which will air on May 26.
