Teyr Pop-Up Gallery: Elevating Bude’s Art Scene with a Fresh Perspective
Aiming to spotlight the artistic talent in Bude, North Cornwall, the Teyr Fine Art Gallery opened its doors on 13 November for a limited two-month run. Located on Princes Street, this pop-up gallery seeks to elevate the town’s profile as a burgeoning art destination, offering locals and visitors an opportunity to engage with fine art in an intimate setting.
The gallery is the brainchild of three local artists—Sue Read (64), Hannah Wheeler (47), and Natalie Day (49)—who share a mission to boost awareness of the town’s artistic potential. Together, they’ve created a space that fosters creativity, conversation, and cultural appreciation.
Bringing Culture and Conversation to Bude
Natalie Day, a Bude native, emphasized the gallery’s purpose:
“We’ve made it a mission to grow the awareness [of the calibre of local artists] and put Bude on the map as a fine art destination.”
Sue Read, known for her appearance on Rick Stein’s Cornwall, added:
“Bude’s quite remote, and we often feel cut off from West Cornwall. Many people don’t really know what’s happening at this end of the county.”
The name Teyr, derived from the Cornish word for three in its feminine form, reflects the trio’s unique collaboration. Each artist brings distinct yet complementary styles, creating a diverse and engaging exhibition space.
Beyond Picture Postcards
A key focus of Teyr is to move away from traditional "holiday souvenir art." As Natalie Day explained, their goal is to offer something more dynamic and unexpected:
“People want a picture of a place they recognize, but that’s not really something any of us do.”
Instead, the gallery features bold, large-scale pieces that challenge the typical notions of Cornish art. Sue Read shared that their collection aims to be “bigger and a bit more out there,” presenting visitors with innovative and thought-provoking works.
Connecting Artists and Audiences
One of Teyr’s standout features is the daily presence of the artists themselves. Visitors can interact directly with Read, Wheeler, and Day, gaining deeper insights into the creative process.
“Meeting people and being able to talk to them about the art can transform how they feel about the artwork,” Day noted.
This personal engagement, rarely found in traditional galleries, enhances the visitor experience and fosters a deeper appreciation for the pieces on display.
A Rotating Collection and Accessibility
The gallery, open Tuesdays to Saturdays until 10 January, will rotate its collection regularly, ensuring there’s always something new for art enthusiasts to discover. The artists hope this approach will keep the gallery fresh and engaging, encouraging repeat visits.
