Tesla to recall 475,000 vehicles in the US

Tesla will recall more than 475,000 vehicles in the US, according to documents submitted to the US Security Agency.

The electric vehicle company announced a recall of 356,309 vehicles due to a potential rear camera issue affecting the 2017-2020 Model 3 Teslas. Another 119,009 Model S was recalled due to possible problems with the front or trunk. According to Reuters, the total number of recalls corresponds to nearly 500,000 vehicles delivered by Tesla last year.

This month, a safety report estimates that about 1% of the model 3 downloaded may have a faulty rearview camera.

Over time, "repeated opening also closing of the trunk lid" can cause excessive wear on the wires that power the rearview camera, according to a safety recall report that Tesla submitted to the NHTSA National Security Administration in the United States Dec. 21.

If the cable core is split due to wear and tear, "reverse camera performance is not visible on the center screen," the report says. Losing the view of the rearview camera can "increase the risk of a collision," he added.

The Model S download includes vehicles from the 2014-2021 model years, some of which may have issues with "secondary locking" in the front or trunk. In another safety alert report, also filed on Dec. 21, Tesla stated that the malfunction could mean the front trunk "could open without warning and affect the driver's view, increasing the risk of disaster if the master key is accidentally released."

The report said about 14% of downloaded S models might have defects. The report states that "Tesla is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or deaths" related to possible malfunctions in both cases.

The recent setback isn't the first safety issue prompting electric vehicle makers to act. He took action following an investigation by NHTSA. This function is now blocked while driving and cannot be used.
