Taylor Hawkins, drummer from Foo Fighters died, as per the band

Key Takeaways:

Taylor Hawkins, the rock band Foo Fighters' longtime drummer, has died. He was 50 years old at the time.

The band described Hawkins' death as a "tragic and untimely loss," but there were no immediate details on how he died.

"His musical spirit, as well as infectious laughter, will live on with all of us forever," said a message sent to reporters via the band's official Twitter account.

"Our thoughts, as well as prayers, are with his wife, children, and family, and we ask that their privacy be respected at this unimaginably difficult time."

Hawkins was probably the most visible member of the band after Foo Fighters founder and frontman Dave Grohl, appearing along with Grohl in interviews as well as playing prominent roles in the band's videos.

He also starred in Foo Fighters' newly released horror-comedy "Studio 666," A demonic force seizes Grohl and turns him murderous in the house where the band is staying.

Hawkins and other band members Pat Smear, Rami Jaffee, Chris Shiflett, and Nate Mendel are all killed off. The film allowed the band, one of rock music's most enduring acts for decades, to have some fun while enacting a long-running joke.

The premise for the film was inspired by their work on their tenth studio album at home in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles.

Hawkins has been the drummer for Foo Fighters for 25 of the band's 28 years, having replaced original drummer William Goldsmith in 1997.

Hawkins was born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1972 and grew up in Laguna Beach, California. Before landing his 1st major gig as a drummer for Canadian singer Sass Jordan, he was a member of Sylvia's small Southern California band. He then spent the mid-1990s as Alanis Morissette's touring drummer before being asked to join the Foo Fighters by Grohl.

Grohl is dealing with the death of a close bandmate for the second time. When Kurt Cobain died in 1994, Grohl was Nirvana's drummer.

Hawkins is survived by his three children and wife, Alison.
