Taapsee Pannu’s powerful “THAPPAD” on Gender Discrimination and Societal Patriarchy.

Anubhav Sinha, an offbeat unconventional director after touching the subjects of communal discrimination towards lower minority caste in his movies “MULK” and “ARTICLE 15” now coming up with “THAPPAD”, starring Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati in lead roles touching about the evil of domestic violence existing in society towards Women.

Women’s, from lower or upper class, be it educated or uneducated is a victim of the domestic violence commonly prevalent in society in all classes of people. Domestic violence is not only about physical violence or just a “Slap”, but it also involves the abuse in the form of physical, verbal, emotional, economic, religious, reproductive and sexual abuse from intimate partners in marriage.

In the present era of women empowerment and gender equality too, girls are taught by females of own family itself to be the homely, timid, soft, submissive and obedient type who don’t raise voice against injustice and be an ideal wife, mother and homemaker who sacrifices everything to make everyone happy.

Taapsee charactered as Amrita in the film, through her powerpack soulful performance, bringing alive the dilemma which she is going through because of the humiliation which shredded her heart and life every way. The movie is raising the question and her voice against the right to be happy and getting equal respect.

Thappad is a story about gender discrimination challenging the societal mindset of Patriarchy were males enjoy the supreme privilege and women’s are underrated and taught to have tolerance (sahanshakti) to adjust and stay with husband in spite of anything.
