Sulfhemoglobinemia: A Rare Condition When A Person Develops Greenish Blood.
Sulfhemoglobinemia, This happens when sulfur atoms are incorporated into the haemoglobin molecules making them dysfunctional.
In 2007, surgeons operating on a 42-years-old Canadian man was shocked to see green blood flowing through his arteries. They immediately sent the sample for analysis and results showed sulfhemoglobinemia condition.
When Hydrogen sulfide interacts with ferric ions in the haemoglobin molecule, a compound named Sulfhemoglobin is produced. It is a greenish derivative of HB and inhibits the oxygen affinity of the molecules.
Medications of Sulfonamides, exposure to sulfur compounds can be the reasons for these conditions. And it can cause Cyanosis (discolouration of the skin) and low blood level. The condition will subside as the life of infected RBCs come to an end that can prolong in some extreme cases.
