Sony reveals new virtual reality headset for PlayStation to contend with Facebook's Quest

Key takeaways:

The Sony's all-new virtual reality headset for Playstations:

Sony disclosed its PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset on Tuesday, as a competitor in the VR space persists in heating up.

Facebook parent Meta, for instance, has dedicated $10 billion over the following year to shift its emphasis to the metaverse. It expects individuals will work and play utilizing its $299 Meta Quest 2 headset in this digital world. But firms like Sony may draw people who want a headset that seamlessly connects and plays the games they already have on their PlayStation consoles.

For instance, Sony's VR headset needs a PlayStation to operate. At the same time, the $299 Meta Quest 2 can connect to a computer for power-intensive gaming apps or function wire-free for less intensive tasks. Sony hasn't disclosed pricing for the headset yet, but it looks identical to the Meta Quest 2 and, like Facebook's headset, comes with two controllers that you use to navigate in VR.

According to reports, Apple is also anticipated to release a virtual reality headset in the future year.

"Our objective is to make a headset that will not only become an engaging part of your living room decor but will also keep you engaged in your game world, to the point where you forget you are using a headset or controller," Sony executive Hideaki Nishino expressed in a release.

The firm stated the new product would have a lens adjustment dial, so users can match the lens space between their eyes to optimize their view. It has a thinner composition than the previous version.
