Snap launches a $230 flying camera named Pixy

Key takeaways:

The firm declared Thursday during its annual partner's summit that Snap is releasing a flying camera.

The Pixy camera is a "pocket-sized" device with no controller. Instead, users tap a switch to send Pixy into one of four preset flight routes. The device floats, orbits, or follows a few feet past the user to take photos and videos, then lands in the user's palm.

Snap is billing Pixy as a partner to its flagship app, Snapchat. The firm said videos and photos from flights automatically transfer into the user's Snapchat Memories. Users could edit the images and share them to any other platform—the Pixy stocks up to 100 videos or 1,000 photos.

It is available as of Thursday in the U.S. and France for $229.99. The base flight pack has the Pixy camera, bumper, a strap, a charging cable, and a rechargeable battery. Extra batteries are available for $19.99, and a dual battery charger is there for $49.99, the firm said. The camera can make five to eight flyings using its default flight modes per battery recharge.
