Recorded when his farewell tour was postponed due to the pandemic, the footage includes collaborations with Dua Lipa, Stevie Nicks, Gorillaz, and Lil Nas X. Many of the duets take place via Zoom, others in the studio under strict security rules. Sir Elton said he ended up signing with the artist "separated by a wall of glass."

On the album cover, the star even wears an Elton John gemstone face mask. Sir Elton, 74, said he enjoyed the experience of being "forced out of his comfort zone" and working with unexpected collaborators. "I realized there was something odd about working this way," he said in a statement accompanying the album announcement. "Early in my career, in the late 1960s, I worked as a session musician. Working with different artists for a block reminded me of that.

"I want to close the loop: I'm doing another music session. And it's still fun."

The album was preceded by Dua Lipa's song Cold Heart (Pnau Remix), a mix of Sir Elton's hits Rocket Man, Sacrifice, Kiss the Bride, and tracks from the 1976 album Where's The Shoorah?
