Scotch & Soda has partnered with Studio 189 for bags.
The Amsterdam-based fashion brand has partnered with Studio 189, the lifestyle fashion brand founded in 2013 by actress Rosario Dawson and luxury CEO Abrima Ervia for a handbag line.
Studio 189 promotes and oversees African and African-inspired fashion by supporting community-led projects, primarily in West Africa. The bags are designed at the Studio 189 product development center in Accra and handcrafted in Bolgatanga by a weaving community led by ASIGE (Advocacy for Social Inclusion and Girls' Education), a non-governmental organization focused on empowering women through work and education.
Only 100 colored raffia bags will be produced, named "Born for Love." Featuring the word "Love" in capital letters woven into the design on the front, this capsule is meant to celebrate unity and togetherness. The color palette is inspired by flowers, plants, and herbs native to Ghana, and the bags are made using a traditional basket weaving technique unique to Upper East Bolgatanga. They are made from the original fibers of Palmyra leaves, also known as raffia, and are colored with plant pigments from hibiscus, millet flakes, and plant leaves.
Which takes another week. The bags come packaged in a limited edition dust bag made from leftover Studio 189 fabric. They will retail for $179 and on sale on the Scotch & Soda website and in some of its stores.
All proceeds from bag sales are donated to Project The Hunger to support the organization's initiatives in countries such as Ghana.
