Rodarte reimagined Hollywood's most glamorous stars as whimsical ballerinas.

Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy have been using their look books as mini-movies since the fall 2018 season. The duo is well-known for casting Hollywood's top models to model their latest collections. Grimes, Kirsten Dunst, Chloe x Halle, Yalitza Aparicio, and Gabrielle Union are famous models who have slipped into their clothes (to name a few). So when it came time to cast their new fall 2022 collection, the pair only wanted to continue this star-studded energy. So this time, they transformed an exciting mix of actors, singers, dancers, and directors into whimsical ballerinas.

The prospect of casting the right in their clothes is always as exciting for the Mulleavy sisters as the design process itself. "When they do a project like this, it combines two different aspects of who we are creative," Kate explains. "Of course, we're designers, but who we cast in the collection reflects who we are as directors." (Notably, in the 2017 film Woodshock, the duo directed Kirsten Dunst.) Charli XCX, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Natasha Lyonne, Lana Condor, Marlee Matlin, also Janicza Bravo, among others, appear in the new fall look book, which was shot over five days. "We look for people who inspire them and collaborate artistically with whom we can collaborate."

Rodarte's fall 2022 world revolved around the concept of the modern-day ballerina—a spirit that has always been present within the label, particularly given its signature tulle gowns. (Let us not forget that the pair also famously designed Natalie Portman's costumes in Black Swan.) "We were thinking about intrinsic things to Rodarte and in our DNA," Laura explains. "We wanted to experiment with [ballerina] silhouettes and a soft pastel color palette," says the designer. The design team had the all-star cast dress up as ballerina dancers for a day, practicing their best poses with toe points and extensions. "It was amazing to watch how everyone took our inspiration and not only made it their own but took it even further," Kate says.
