According to legend, the first Hemetrios King of Macedonia, in 295 BC. He went to occupy Rhodes island with a large army. But he did not succeed in the defence of the people of Rhodes and withdrew his army, which was defeated, leaving many loots.
The people of Rhodes sold the remaining loot and built the statue of the sun god Helios to Shares of Sculptor Lindos. The construction of the statue started in 291 BC and lasted for 12 years. Rodos was a frequent port at that time.
The fire, burned at night at the tip of the long torch in the hand of the statue, served as a lighthouse to the sailors. There is no information about the structure of the statue. The statue is thought to be 32m high and made of bronze.
Rhodes statue was destroyed by a serve earthquake in 225 BC. The destroyed parts remained there for centuries. The statue of Rhodes is one of the seven ancient wonders of the world.
