Hillary Clinton says the alleged Supreme Court vote to oust Rowe vs. Wade is 'so embarrassing'
"This decision is a direct violation of women's dignity, rights, and lives, let alone decades of established law," Clinton tweeted late Monday.
Hillary Clinton spoke after a draft ruling from the US Supreme Court reportedly leaked to Politico on Monday that was expected to overturn a landmark 1973 ruling that legalized Rowe's abortion of Wade.
"That's not surprising. But it's still a scandal. This decision directly violates women's dignity, rights, and lives, not to mention decades of established law."
"It would kill and subjugate women, even if most Americans believe abortion should be legal," he added. "Embarrassing." Clinton's release responded to a "draft of majority opinion" on the Supreme Court ruling that Politico said was received Monday.
The 98-page draft opinion piece, allegedly written by Judge Samuel Alito and leaked to the press with a serious breach of confidentiality, said that "Roe was wrong from the start" and that "we [the majority of the Supreme Court] were the ones who believed Rowe and Casey [ another decision on abortion rights in 1992 supporting the previous decision] had to be overturned.
The draft document, described as the court's first draft and opinion, also said, "It is time to hear the Constitution and return the abortion issue to elected officials."
A decision to oust Roe looked likely when the conservative Supreme Court ruled in December to file a lawsuit barring Mississippi from having abortions at 15 weeks pregnant. However, since allowing a ban would be in Roe's favor, the move raises hopes that the conservative majority in the court will vote against the case.
According to Politico, Judges Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Cavanaugh, and Amy Connie Barrett have been appointed as Alito, while three Democratic-appointed judges, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan, are dealing with one or more dissidents.
The Planned Parenthood Federation of America and issued a statement Monday in response to an expired draft opinion, writing, "If this decision is reached, 26 states stand ready to take swift action to ban abortions, which is more than 36 million leaving women pregnant. Age and others capable of conceiving without access to abortion.
"This leaked statement is shocking and unprecedented and underscores our worst fear: the Supreme Court is ready to end constitutional abortion rights by ruling Rowe v. Wade uplift. Devastating and comes just as abortion advocacy groups unveil their final plans to ban abortion nationwide," the statement said.
"Understand that in this case, Planned Parenthood and our partners have prepared for every possible outcome and are prepared to fight. Planned childcare health centers remain open, abortion is still legal, and we will continue to fight hard to protect the right to access safe, legal abortion.
