Golden Globe: Belfast and the Power of the Dog Lead in the Field of Problem Awards

Sir Kenneth Branas Autobiographical Film Belfast and the Power of the Dog, the western film starring Benedict Cumberbatch, topped the controversial Golden Globe nominations. The two films each competed for seven prizes, including best drama.

The Globe is usually the most famous award except the Oscars, but the January ceremony was not broadcast on television.

NBC rejected it after a series of revelations, including a lack of diversity among voters. Earlier this year, it emerged that none of the 87 members of the secret organization behind the award - the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) - were black.

A coalition of 100 Hollywood PR firms accused the organization of "discriminatory behavior, unprofessionalism, ethical inadequacy, and alleged financial corruption."

HFPA membership and rules have been revised, but it remains to be seen whether any of this year's nominees will retire due to the controversy. Sir Kenneth has two nominations for Belfast, his childhood retelling in Northern Ireland - for Best Director and Best Screenplay - and his stars, including Catriona Balf and Jamie Dornan, have also been acclaimed.

Cumberbatch and co-star Kirsten Dunst have been nominated for the Netflix Acting Awards "Power of the Dog," while Jane Campion will be competing with Sir Kenneth as screenwriter and director. Other big names nominated for acting awards include Will Smith for the role of Venus and father Serena Williams in King Richard; Kristen Stewart for the position of Princess Diana in Spencer; and Lady Gaga for the House of Gucci.

Olivia Coleman, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Andrew Garfield, Denzel Washington, and Nicole Kidman are also running. The Golden Globes also include TV shows - Succession leads TV nominations with five nominations, followed by The Morning Show and Ted Lasso with four each.

It is unknown if the others were nominated, but the HFPA not consider this because of the controversy. The organization said it had "accepted directors/studios requesting that their content be considered only for certain categories."

It was also reported that some studios refused to provide voters with links to preview their candidates. However, there were no glaring omissions in the nomination list revealed by rapper Snoop Dogg.

But it's not vacation posts and quotes from nominees who seem to be trying to keep their distance from the awards without pulling them out altogether.
