Fred saves a point for Man Utd against Leicester
Key takeaways:
- This season, Fred has netted four goals, his best return for Manchester United.
- Manchester United suffered another crash in the fight for a Champions League place as Leicester restricted them at Old Trafford.
The damage could have been even worse for Ralf Rangnick's guys. Leicester was refused a possible winner 10 minutes from when referee Andre Marriner was sent to the screen by the video assistant referee, with Marriner toppling James Maddison's struggle for a foul on Raphael Varane in the build-up.
United could count themselves lucky to get the point.
After a soft opening, Kelechi Iheanacho scored a 63rd-minute opener when he met Maddison's left-wing cross with a good diving header, which sent the ball back into the far corner.
The Foxes' benefit stayed only three minutes, with Brazilian midfielder Fred on hand to convert the rebound after Bruno Fernandes' shot had been made into his way by Kasper Schmeichel.
It was a disappointing result for the hosts, who are now three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, having played two matches more and with a journey to the Gunners, plus encounters with Liverpool and Chelsea, still to come.
Rashford's suffering
It says everything regarding the type of season Marcus Rashford has had. Even with the sick Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, and Mason Greenwood missing this game completely, the England man was only given a seat on the bench.
Rashford's future has been discussed long and hard over the previous few weeks.
With an agreement that is due to pass next year, although there is an opportunity to extend to 2024, a decision over Rashford will be one of the new boss's first tasks when he takes over.
The theory is a good break, followed by an extreme pre-season and a chance to play regularly in his best position, on the left, would fix many of Rashford's problems.
