Fran Drescher said the music for Nanny, starring Rachel Bloom, was "very well developed

Drescher announced in early 2020 that a musical based on the 1993 television series of the same name would be coming to Broadway.

While celebrating the release of his new book N is for Nanny, 64-year-old Drescher told news about his new music and where he is in the development process.

"The Nanny, the musical, is developing perfectly," he said. "Rachel Bloom wrote the lyrics. Peter [Marc Jacobson] also I are working on that book. We will have our first official reading at the end of July."

"I can't imagine it opened at least two years ago, but it's fascinating," he added.

The musical Nanny was inspired by the 1993 series of the same name, created by Drescher and aired for six seasons on CBS. The stage production follows a girl from Flushing, Queens, who becomes a nanny to the Broadway producer's three children.

In January 2020, Drescher confirmed to news that a Broadway production was being prepared with the help of Jacobson, her creative partner, and ex-husband.

Marc Bruni, who produced Beautifully: The Carole King Musical, will direct the musical, while Adam Schlesinger, who tragically died from complications from COVID later this year, will write music for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend creator Bloom.

"Nothing has been chosen yet - we are planning - but we are confident that we will find a great actress who is funny, charming, and with a great voice," Drescher said. "Of course, I'll do it myself. But we have to change grandma's title.

Speaking to news at their book event, Drescher noted that Bloom's participation in the project was a refreshing experience.

"We're glad Rachel wanted to do it because she grew up on the show," he explained. "He gets the humor. He's super-intelligent, Jewish, and old enough to get modern benefits from it; now, he's sharing the HBO Max series with his daughter.
