Eddie Redmayne claims that playing a trance character in The Danish Girl was a mistake.

Actor Eddie Redmayne said it was a "mistake" to play a transgender character in the 2015 film The Danish Girl. The star was nominated for an Oscar for his best role as Lille Elbe, one of the first people in the world to have sex reassignment surgery. The film received praise from some at the time, while others felt that a translator should be chosen for the role.

"No, I'm not going to do it now. I made this film with the best of intentions, but I think it was a mistake," he said. "The bigger discussion about being frustrating is that a lot of people don't have a seat at the table," Redmain told the Sunday Times.

"There has to be a leveling. Otherwise, we will continue this debate." The Dane was released months after Redmain won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

At the time, the star acknowledged that "transistors build on the success of cisgender over the years" and said he hoped more transactors could play the role of trance in the future. The following year, after being criticized for apparently claiming that The Danish Girl helped raise awareness of transgender issues, she said it was "an honor to be a part of this conversation in some way" and that it was "an ally of the transgender community."

Redmain, involved in the Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, also added support to members of the trans community after writer J. K. Rowling posted a tweet opposing the phrase "menstruating." He later also criticized the "hate" he encountered, admitting that the harassment of transgender people on the Internet was "just as appalling."
