Donald Trump on the high court decision
Key Takeaways:
- Former US President Donald Trump said on Friday that "God made a choice" to eliminate the national right to abortion after the Supreme Court overturned nearly five decades of established law.
- In the 2020 presidential election, President Joe Biden defeated him, but he has refused to accept the result.
After the Supreme Court reversed nearly five decades of established law, former US President Donald Trump claimed Friday that "God made a choice" to remove the national right to abortion.
After a 6-3 vote in favor of allowing states to choose their abortion laws, Trump told Fox News that the decision was "following the Constitution" and "giving rights back when they should have been given long ago."
Trump responded that "God made the decision" when asked if he felt that his appointment of three conservative justices to the court during his administration contributed to this conclusion.
However, the 45th president spoke up once more a short while later to claim responsibility for the decision.
In a statement, he said, "Today's decision, which is the greatest WIN for LIFE in a generation...(was) only made feasible because I delivered everything as promised, including nominating and securing the confirmation of three highly regarded and powerful Constitutionalists to the United States Supreme Court.
"Doing so was a big honor for me."
Three justices were appointed during Trump's four years in office, tipping the balance of the Supreme Court toward its current conservative majority.
These appointees, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, all voted in favor of the majority judgment on Friday.
Trump called Democrats, the media, and "RINOs" — a pejorative nickname for Republicans who aren't considered to be sufficiently right-wing — the "enemy of the people" in a statement that had the customary smattering of capital letters.
"Your Rights are being safeguarded, the country is being defended, and there is hope and time to save America, even if the Radical Left is doing all in their ability to destroy our country!
"I'll never give up the struggle for the Great People of our Country,"
Trump is openly considering a second bid for the White House as his actions and inactions during the assault of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, are being scrutinized at Congressional hearings.
President Joe Biden beat him in his reelection attempt in 2020, but he has refused to recognize the outcome.
