Initially, the WHO said mask should most effective be worn by using clinical workers, or people who had signs and symptoms like coughing and sneezing.
However, in recent months, there's been expanded proof that many people with the virus do now not have signs - but can still be contagious - and masks can stop them from passing it on to others. The WHO modified its steering in June.
Meanwhile, there may be extra recognition that the hazard of transmission is higher in poorly ventilated indoor spaces This means that if absolutely everyone wears face coverings it will "shield against the most not unusual mode of transmission - droplets - and to some extent maybe aerosol droplets," says Kim Lavoie, chair of behavioural medication on the University of Quebec at Montreal's psychology department.

Prof Lavoie adds that "there has been extended research" into face coverings, including observational studies which indicate "countries with high mask carrying seem to have lower contamination rates". Furthermore, a number of scientists now say there is in addition to the ones around them. There is also growing recognition that the pandemic could keep for a protracted time - and, if so, face coverings might be visible as something important to assist people to adapt, and reduce risks as agencies and colleges re-open.

"Covid's no longer going anywhere - we'll probably have a vaccine in years, no longer months," says Prof Lavoie, who has been main the iCARE Study, "So a majority of these principles want to be integrated and tailored to the new ordinary life."
