Conflict Erupts in Minneapolis After Federal Agent Kills U.S. Citizen Renee Good

On the morning of January 7, 2026, Renee Nicole Good was shot at point blank range near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue. Witnesses and social media videos show federal agents surrounding her Honda SUV, which was stopped in a snowy residential street. According to eyewitnesses, as agents attempted to open her car door, Good put the vehicle in reverse and then began to drive forward. A third agent positioned near the front of the car drew his service weapon and fired three shots through the windshield, striking Good in the head.

Conflicting Narratives of Domestic Terrorism

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and President Donald Trump quickly defended the officer, characterizing the shooting as an act of self defense. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem labeled the incident an act of domestic terrorism, claiming Good had been stalking and impeding agents before attempting to run them over. However, local leaders including Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz have publicly disputed this narrative. Mayor Frey called the federal account of self defense "bullshit," while Governor Walz urged citizens not to believe the federal "propaganda machine."

Victim Identified as U.S. Citizen and Mother

Renee Nicole Good was a 37 year old mother of three and a U.S. citizen who lived in Minneapolis but was originally from Colorado. Friends and city council members described her as a community observer who was at the scene to monitor federal enforcement actions rather than a target of an arrest. Her mother, Donna Ganger, described her as a loving and affectionate person who was active as a poet and writer. The fact that a U.S. citizen was killed during an immigration operation has further fueled the legal and political controversy surrounding the event.

Massive Protests and Heightened Tensions

The shooting occurred just a mile from where George Floyd was killed in 2020, significantly heightening local tensions. Following the incident, hundreds of protesters gathered at the scene for a vigil, chanting "ICE out of Minneapolis" and demanding an immediate end to the federal crackdown. The shooting comes just days after the administration sent 2,000 additional agents to the Twin Cities for the largest immigration operation in the region's history. Both the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are now investigating the incident.
