When Charlie Cox got a call from Marvel, he thought he was dreaming.
The Daredevil actor, 38, opened up about being offered a role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of the global pandemic era and the sixth-highest in history.
When Cox picked up the phone in June 2020, he didn't expect to hear Kevin Feige's voice from the studio head. "You never know what might happen. It was a wild ride. "During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he spoke about the unexpected moment.
"I'm not going to lie; it was a small surreal. It's worth remembering that it's been a while. I was fairly certain it was over, "The British actor explained, referring to his Netflix series Daredevil's cancellation in 2018.
According to Cox, "'We've got some ideas,' Kevin said, 'but I wanted to make sure you were interested in principle.' 'I'm very interested,' I replied. After that, I went two months without hearing from anyone. And I began to wonder if it had all been a dream."
It was a lucky break for him that it wasn't a dream. He was sneaked onto the set of No Way Home, dressed in a massive cloak, to film a scene with Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei.
"Being able to blend into that environment made me feel quite at ease. For four years, I played the character almost every day. "Cox spoke about his role as Matt Murdock, a lawyer-turned-vigilante.
"I have a strong sense that his essence is now nestled within me. I didn't stress about it too much, but I was still nervous on the day, which I hadn't been in a long time."
"I hate lying," the actor admitted after filming the movie about the challenge of keeping the secret.
After rumors circulated online that his character was featured in the No Way Home trailer, Cox denied his involvement before release.
In September 2021, Cox told ComicBook.com, "I can promise you those are not my forearms," to put an end to speculation. "I hadn't heard those rumors before, but they don't apply to my Daredevil. I'm not a part of it. If that's the case, I'm not on board. It's with a different character."
Cox told THR that he saw Murdock's return as a victory that could lead to more opportunities for himself and the character.
"It's a pivotal moment for the character, not just for me. I felt a strong sense of obligation. "He admitted it. "If that scene works, is cool, and appears to be in place, the possibilities are endless. It would also be fantastic for Matt. Even though it may sound strange, I have a strong attachment to him."
