Channel Islands host Gary Burgess has died aged 46
The 46-year-old man, known for his extensive media work for 30 years, died on New Year's Eve at a nursing home in New Jersey. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer in November 2020.
In a statement for his release after his death, he said he had the "happiest life," working with "some of the best amazing people," and wished his final words were "thank you."
Mr. Burgess has worked for several media companies, including ITV Channel Television, Jersey Channel 103 Radio, Jersey Evening Post, and Radio Guernsey. For his journalism, he received the Jersey Bailiff Silver Seal Award in 2020 and was named Champion of the Year at the Jersey Evening Post Pride of Jersey.
In a recent statement, he said it was time to give up my microphone and keyboard for other people to talk about me.
"I had the best life. I had the happiest life," he said. She said she met her soulmate "who became my husband" and worked with "some of the most amazing people in the newsroom and studio, doing work I truly admire."
"I can share my relatively short time on this planet surrounded by friends and loved ones who have enriched my life in ways they may never understand," he added. "It's time to give up my microphone and keyboard so others can talk about me, so let my last words be 'thank you.'
"Everyone in my life has helped me live my best life my way. It will happen." Her husband Alan said in a statement that "Gary died peacefully in his sleep in a Jersey hospital after years of battling cancer." "To avoid stereotypes, I will quote a line from the last episode of The West Wing, which is one of Gary's favorite shows and is spoken from husband to husband with love and pride.
"You did very well, Gary." Very good.
She also thanked the staff who cared for her husband and "many benefactors" for their "positivity, warmth and support."
