Care Home Hosts 'Joke Sharing' Event for Residents

Residents Enjoy a Day of Humor and Connection in Chippenham

Residents at Flowers Manor care home in Chippenham were treated to a day filled with laughter and witty jokes during a special Edinburgh Festival-inspired "joke sharing" event. The initiative, led by lifestyle assistant Joanne Seavers, was designed to bring joy and connection to the elderly residents through humor.

A Day of Laughter and Bonding

Joanne Seavers, who came up with the idea, described the event as “great fun,” noting how the residents enthusiastically shared their favorite jokes and memories. “It was a trip down memory lane for a lot of people,” Seavers said, adding that watching the residents laugh together made the staff feel "amazing."

The event proved to be a hit with residents, including Sue and Brian, who were delighted to participate. Sue shared how laughter plays an important role in staying positive: "To laugh you're happy, and you make the best of what you've got." Brian echoed her sentiment, adding that "it brings people together."

The Importance of Laughter in Care Settings

Deputy manager Gemma Morrey emphasized the significance of events like these, especially for residents with dementia. “Laughter’s so important because even those with dementia can take part and be included,” she said. These moments of shared joy not only lift spirits but also help build stronger relationships between residents and staff.

Seavers pointed out that humor is something the staff at Flowers Manor prioritize. “We spend a lot of time trying to make people laugh. It's really important—it builds relationships and makes the care home feel more like a community,” she explained.

A Community Uplifted by Humor

The joke sharing event was a unique way for residents to express themselves, reminisce, and find a sense of belonging through laughter. For the staff, seeing the residents engage and enjoy themselves was heartwarming and reinforced the power of humor in care environments.
