Cara Delevingne Channels Elton John in ‘Step Into Christmas’ Video Remake
Model and actress Cara Delevingne has stepped into the iconic shoes of Elton John, portraying the music legend in a recreation of the 1973 music video for his classic holiday track, Step Into Christmas. Donning oversized blue glasses, a shiny green waistcoat, and a short brown wig, Delevingne perfectly embodies Elton's vibrant and flamboyant style.
The 32-year-old actress described the experience as "a dream I didn’t know I had until it happened." Speaking about her admiration for Sir Elton, she added, “I wish I could pretend to be Elton every day. To say his music has had a deeply profound effect on me is an understatement.”
A Festive Blast from the Past
The new video, released on Wednesday, offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into a humorous set where producers attempt to make things appropriately festive. Delevingne, in full costume, hilariously announces to skeptical producers that she will be playing Sir Elton.
The video cleverly switches between shots from the original and the remake, as Delevingne imitates Elton's signature moves while playing the piano and singing the iconic Christmas tune. The detailed recreation even features orange feathers and colorful balloons, reminiscent of the original festive vibe.
A Collaboration Born at Glastonbury
Elton John, now 77, shared that the idea for this collaboration came about after he and Delevingne met at the Glastonbury music festival earlier this year. Reflecting on their meeting, he said, "She's hilarious to spend time with. We both have quite a self-deprecating sense of humor."
When the suggestion of Delevingne playing him in the Step Into Christmas video arose, Elton described it as “the perfect opportunity.” He added, "Thank God Cara thought the same because it came out great."
Cara’s Humorous Take on Her Future Biopic
As a long-time admirer of Elton John, Cara humorously expressed her wish for the music icon to one day return the favor by playing her in a biopic. “Fingers crossed,” she joked, adding a playful twist to the festive collaboration.
Step Into Christmas: A Timeless Classic
Originally released in November 1973, Step Into Christmas climbed to number 24 in the UK Top 40 and topped the Billboard Christmas Singles chart in the United States. Now, more than 50 years later, the song has made its way back to the UK singles chart, sitting at number 15.
Elton John's Musical Future Amid Health Concerns
While Elton John’s performance at Glastonbury 2023 remains a recent highlight, the singer revealed challenges with his vision that have affected his ability to work on new music. In an interview with Good Morning America, Elton shared that an infection caused him to lose vision in his right eye, with his left eye also presenting difficulties.
Despite these challenges, Elton reassured fans during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, stating that he plans to continue making music and maintaining a “musical future.”
