Caffeine warning: How many cups of coffee should you drink per day?

"The healthiest way to drink coffee is hot and black. One cup contains almost no calories or carbohydrates, no fat, and is low in sodium, "Sakina Diwan, a dietician, agreed.

Uma Naidoo, a nutritional psychiatrist and director of nutritional also lifestyle psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital addressed some of these concerns by recommending three cups of coffee per day.

According to Naidoo, a 10-year study of 676 older men's coffee consumption and cognitive health found that coffee drinkers carried less than half the cognitive decline as non-coffee drinkers, and those who drank three cups per day had a minor reduction. A Harvard study also looked at the likelihood of death in over two lakh people over 20 years and found that coffee drinkers were less likely to die, with those who drank 3.1 to five cups of coffee per day living longer.

What effect does coffee have on brain function and overall health?

Naidoo made the following points in an Instagram post:

  • Caffeine raises serotonin and acetylcholine levels, which may stimulate the brain and help to keep the blood-brain barrier stable.
  • The polyphenol micronutrients found in coffee may help to prevent free radical tissue damage as well as brain-blood vessel blockage.
  • Coffee beans contain high levels of trigonelline, which may activate antioxidants and protect brain blood vessels.

So, how much should a person have?

Because caffeine may not suit everyone and excessive consumption may result in digestive issues, Naidoo advises to 'tune into your innate body intelligence.' "This means understanding how foods and beverages make you feel and acting accordingly." "If you don't feel good after drinking coffee, it's probably not good for you," she wrote in the post.

According to Sakina Diwan, a dietician at Bhatia Hospital in Mumbai, coffee appears to be good for most people in moderation 3 to 5 cups daily, or up to 400 milligrams of caffeine. "The healthiest way to drink coffee is hot and black." One cup contains almost no calories or carbohydrates, no fat, and low sodium. "Black coffee contains micronutrients such as potassium, magnesium, and niacin," Diwan added.
