Brazil to hold second round of presidential election: Bolsonaro vs Lula in first round, results to be announced on October 30
Brazil's first round of presidential elections on Sunday pitted current President Jair Bolsonaro against former President Lula de Silva. The polling took place on Sunday itself and counting began only after its conclusion. 99.87% votes have been counted. De Silva received 48.4% of the vote, while Bolsonaro received 43.23%.
According to the Brazilian constitution, any candidate must receive at least 50% of the vote to win the election. If not, another round of voting takes place between the top 2 candidates.
The survey proved to be wrong
The eyes of the world are on the Brazilian presidential election. All the polls and surveys are saying that former President Lula is going to win easily. Some polls showed him getting more than 65% of the vote. After Sunday's vote, it was clear that even though the Western media portrayed Bolsonaro as defeated, Brazilians would not dismiss him so easily.
Now the President's decision will come on October 30 in this largest country in Latin America. Earlier, 21.7 crore people are at risk of violence in this country. Bolsonaro has already said that he will not concede if the results are not in his favour.
Bolsonaro's claim
Brazil is facing challenges such as environmental balance, hunger and economy. However, President Bolsonaro is misleading voters in the name of rigged voting machines. They claim that one can lose an election only when something untoward happens. He goes so far as to say that the army should check the results.
President Bolsonaro campaigned and held rallies in these areas, even as the country suffered floods and fires in the Amazon jungle. His opponents also took out a rally for this. Bolsonaro claims that all 27 Brazilian states will win.
Bolsonaro wants another term
Bolsonaro, 67, has made it clear that his conservative social liberal party will win the election either way. Earlier he said - I won the election in 2018. If there is no cheating this time, he will win this election too.
