At the Cannes Film Festival, Top Gun: Maverick will premiere

Key Takeaways:

Top Gun: Maverick, starring Tom Cruise, will have its world premiere at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. On May 18, it will be screened at a gala. The Festival kicks off on May 17 and runs until May 28. On April 14, the lineup will be revealed in Paris.

The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 action film Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick, is finally here. The star will be in attendance for the screening on May 18 in Cannes. The film will be released in French theatres on May 25 and in American theatres on May 27. Tom will be observed in a special tribute at the Festival.

Tom had only been to Cannes once before, on May 18, 1992, to see Ron Howard's Far and Away, the Festival's closing film. That evening, he had also given the Palm d'Or to director Bille August for his film The Best Intentions.

Top Gun: Maverick was considered to be released much sooner, but due to the Covid pandemic, it had to be postponed several times.

Now, the question is whether Cannes can reclaim its title as the Queen of Festivals. Venice has been in the spotlight for the past two years, hosting Oscar contenders such as Denis Villeneuve's Dune and Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog.

Apart from Top Gun: Maverick, Baz Luhrmann's Elvis biopic, starring Austin Butler (as the King), Tom Hanks, and Kodi Smit-McPhee, is expected to premiere at Cannes (The Power of the Dog).

The Festival was launched in 2001 with Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge and in 2013 with The Great Gatsby. David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future, Florian Zeller's The Son, and Wes Anderson's Asteroid City are the other contenders at Cannes this year. They are most likely to compete in the top division.
