A Russian assassination plot against President Zelenskyy has been avoided

Alexei Danilov, secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, said a group of elite Chechen special forces was behind the killing and had since been "disappeared."

According to reports, Ukrainian authorities have confirmed that the assassination attempt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been prevented.

According to a Ukrainian Telegram report, Alexei Danilov, secretary of the country's National Security and Defense Council, said Tuesday that local forces managed to stop a plot to kill Zelenskyi.

Danilov said a group of elite Chechen special forces known as the Kadyrovites were behind the assassination attempt and have since been "disappeared," according to Axios.

"We are very familiar with the special operation that the cadres had to carry out directly to remove our president," said Danilov.

He said Kadyrov's unit was split in two, one was destroyed at Gostomel, and the other was fired upon.

According to Danilov, Ukrainian authorities were informed of the plan by Russia's Federal Security Service members, who do not support the war.

In a video statement released Thursday, Zelensky said he had been the main target of the Russian government since launching its invasion of his country last week reported.

"According to our information, the adversary marked me as target number 1, my family - as target number 2," Zelensky said. "They want to destroy Ukraine politically by annihilating the head of state. In addition, we have information that an enemy sabotage group has entered Kyiv."

Following his comments, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki confirmed that the United States government remains in touch with Zelenskyy and is aware of his whereabouts.

"We will not be dealing with security issues, but we are working to provide him with various supports," he said.
