Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned that foreign troops will be "hit in the head" when trying to harass or influence the country. About an event marking the 100th anniversary of the ruling Communist Party, he gave a provocative speech on Thursday.

Xi also said that Beijing would not allow "holy sermons" to be made in statements generally considered directed at the United States. This comes as China is criticized for alleged human rights abuses and repression in Hong Kong. Relations within the US and China have declined recently due to trade, espionage, and the pandemic.

The Taiwan issue is also a significant source of tension. While democratic Taiwan sees itself as a sovereign nation, Beijing considers the island a breakaway province. Under its laws, the United States must protect Taiwan if Beijing uses force to retake the island. On Thursday, Xi said China had an "unshakable commitment" to reunite with Taiwan.

"No one should underestimate the determination, will, and ability of the Chinese people to defend their national sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said. During the 100th anniversary on Thursday morning, military jets, gun salutes, and patriotic songs were played.

Tiananmen Square in Beijing had a carefully vetted crowd, many of them not wearing masks. In newly weeks, the country has seen a media thunderstorm promoting a party-approved version of China's history. Hong Kong also celebrated its broadcast anniversary on the same day.

What catches the eye of Si's message?

Mr. Xi, who spoke for about an hour, reiterated the party's role in modern China, saying it was essential for the country's growth and efforts to separate it from the people would fail. "Only socialism can save China, and only socialism with a Chinese character can develop China," he said, referring to a system in which the party includes markets to reform the economy.
