Blackout across the country due to breakdown in Bangladesh's National Power Grid, 14 crore people are forced to live in the dark.

According to Power Grid Company (PGCB) officials, a transmission line fault has occurred in the Jamuna river district in the eastern part of the country, leading to blackout. Because of this, electricity crisis has occurred in 80 percent areas of the country. Earlier, on May 2, 2017, a grid failure caused a power crisis in 32 districts in Bangladesh.

A breakdown in the national power grid has occurred in Bangladesh, causing blackout across the country. Around 140 million people in Bangladesh have been without power since the afternoon due to a widespread blackout due to a grid failure, the government's electricity distribution company said. According to Power Grid Company (PGCB) officials, a transmission line fault has occurred in the Jamuna river district in the eastern part of the country, leading to blackout. Because of this, electricity crisis has occurred in 80 percent areas of the country. 

Earlier, on May 2, 2017, a grid failure caused a power crisis in 32 districts in Bangladesh.

A PGCB official said the grid failure caused power generators to trip one by one, resulting in power outages in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Barisal and Mymansingh divisions.

The reason for the grid failure is not known

Minister of State for ICT Department Junaid Ahmed Palak said power supply could be restored in Dhaka by late night. By 5 pm, supplies were started in some areas including Banga Bhavan and Gana Bhavan.

There may be trouble for telecom service in the country

The Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) has said that telecom service may be affected in some areas of Bangladesh due to disruption in the national power grid.

Bangladesh is already facing power crisis

Lack of electricity in Bangladesh is likely to affect its economic development. Because the government has decommissioned all diesel-powered power plants to reduce import costs. Diesel-powered plants contribute about 6 percent of Bangladesh's electricity generation.

Potential impact on industry

Earlier this month, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association chairman Farooq Hasan said the situation is so dire that garment factories are now without electricity for about 4 to 10 hours a day. Bangladesh is the world's second largest textile exporter after China and contributes 80 percent of their foreign exchange every year.
