Unless you live in a very remote section of Tibet, chances are you probably haven't seen a black apple until now. Black Diamond apples are a unique variety from the family of Hua Niu apples also identified as the Chinese red sweet. The name is slightly misleading because they aren't exactly black, but preferably a dark shade like purple.
The rare apples owe their colour to their original geography in Nyingchi, a small city in the hills of Tibet, Where they get a lot of ultraviolet light through the day but the temperature fluctuates dramatically at night, producing the skin to develop a deep, dark colour. The flesh centre is white and bright like any other apple.
Black Diamond apples are produced inside a very limited window and are normally available for just 2 months each year. In China, people are only sold in high-end supermarkets regularly in gift boxes. And while an unusual apple starts around $7, some can be as pricey as $20 each!
