Max Verstappen Edges Out Norris to Secure Japanese GP Pole Position

Max Verstappen claimed pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix after edging out McLaren’s Lando Norris in a closely contested qualifying session at the Suzuka Circuit. The reigning world champion delivered a blistering lap in Q3, clocking in at 1:28.197 — just 0.085 seconds ahead of Norris, who had looked strong throughout the weekend.

The Red Bull driver showed why he remains the man to beat, bouncing back from a difficult Friday practice session to dominate when it mattered most. Despite pressure from a fast-improving McLaren, Verstappen’s pace in the final sector secured his place at the front of the grid.

Lando Norris, who has been consistently impressive this season, pushed Verstappen all the way and will start alongside him on the front row. His McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, also showed excellent form and will start third, giving the Woking-based team a strong chance in Sunday’s race.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz struggled to match the leaders’ pace and will line up fourth and fifth respectively. Meanwhile, Mercedes had a mixed session, with Lewis Hamilton qualifying seventh and George Russell in ninth.

After the session, Verstappen said, “It was a tough session. McLaren kept us on our toes, but I’m happy with the lap and excited for tomorrow.”

With Verstappen leading the grid and McLaren hot on his heels, the stage is set for an exciting Japanese Grand Prix. Suzuka, known for its fast corners and passionate fans, rarely disappoints — and with a close grid and improving form from multiple teams, Sunday’s race promises to be a thriller.
