UN Human Rights Council urges global action, including reparations, to tackle racism against people -people of African descent to "fix." His new report also calls for education reform and an apology to combat discrimination.
The results cite concerns in about 60 countries, including the UK, Belgium, France, Canada, Brazil, and Colombia. The investigation began after the murder of George Floyd, an unarmed black man detained by American police in 2020. According to the results, protests against the death of the Minnesota man and the conviction of a white police officer were "key moments in the fight against racism."
In a statement on Monday, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called on "all countries to deny racism - and start exposing it" and "to listen to the voices of people of African descent." Based on discussions with more than 300 experts and people of African descent, the UN report aims to call on countries to end racial injustice.
Police in North America, Europe, and Latin America have systematically used racist and excessively violent profiles. According to the report, racism is the biggest problem in countries linked to the former trafficking of millions of Africans into slavery.
The results conclude that to achieve racial justice, states "must correct centuries of violence and discrimination ... including through formal confessions and apologies, truth-seeking and redress procedures of all kinds". It praised Black Lives Matter and said the group should "receive funding, public recognition, and support."
