After joining Borussia Monchengladbach, Rose led Dortmund to second place in the Bundesliga, eight points behind winners Bayern Munich.

They were stopped from both the Champions League and Europa League and were knocked out of the German Cup by second-tier St Pauli.

Dortmund stated they would discuss "the composition of the future coaching squad in the coming days."

Rose was in charge for 47 matches, prevailing 27 and losing 16.

"This day is not easy for any of us because the mutual relation was, is, and remains great," said Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke.

"After a bad season for various reasons, we realized that we didn't get the most out of our options in many places."

Dortmund was knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage - completing behind Ajax and Sporting Lisbon - and was stopped from the Europa League by Rangers.

"Despite a tough season with multiple imponderables, I was convinced of our way," Rose stated.

"During our conversation, I understood that all those reliable are no longer the 100% confidence of all those reliable."
