Golden dreams waiting
for green card: For 151 years in the US, people of Indian origin have been
waiting for a green card.
Thousands of people
of Indian origin have been waiting for green cards in America for decades. Dr.
working in California. Sriram Chahal treated many patients during the last
corona period. They have been waiting for a green card for a decade. He says he
has not been able to visit his ailing parents in India for the past ten years.
I am not coming to India for fear that somewhere America will not allow me to
return. Currently, 6,32,219 Indian immigrants and their families are stuck in the
green card backlog.
This is the result of
the strict sanctions of the Trump government. David J., a scholar at the Cato
Institute in Washington. According to Beer, the green card waiting list for
Indian Americans is 151 years. Indians account for 80 percent of those
seeking employment-based green cards. Beer states that this situation will
continue if the law regarding green card allocation is not changed.
The US government
issues green cards every year to 1,40,000 immigrants who find themselves working there. The
quota of Indians is only 7 percent. That means only 9800 Indians get green
card every year. This year's quota is due to expire soon. While the situation
is that the number of professionals of Indian origin in America is very large.
Rules tightened under
the Trump regime, making green card quotas more difficult to determine
• Rules such as
interviews and biometrics were added to the process during Trump's tenure. As a
result, visas and green cards became more difficult to obtain. Countries like
Iraq, South Africa, Mauritania have less qualified professionals. Due to which
they do not need to wait.
• Trump also
implemented a rule that any immigrants who have received government benefits
such as cash, assistance, food assistance, free drugs cannot get a green card.
• During Corona, the
government did not pay attention to the green card making process. The National
Visa Center was also understaffed which is still inadequate. 421,358 interviews are
pending in April this year.
• One million green
cards lost in a decade. Fewer applications are often accepted. For this reason
green cards are allotted below the prescribed limit. The additional green card
quota is not added in the next financial year. 1 lakh green cards
have been wasted this year.
What Now : Advisory
Panel Recommendation- Speed up the process
To solve the problem, Biden's Asian American Advisory Commission should review all green card applications within the next 6 months. That is, people should be informed whether their application has been accepted or not. Indian community leader Ajay Jain Bhutoria is also included in this 25-member panel.
The proposal presented by him has been
approved by 25 commissioners. It was
also recommended to increase the number of officers at the National Visa Center
and increase the speed of interviews.
