While Rivers is currently a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 in what would be his first year of eligibility, a possible return to the field could significantly alter his timeline for induction. 

A Hall of Fame spokesperson explained that if Rivers signs to an active NFL roster, his eligibility countdown would restart, requiring him to wait five full seasons from his final game before being considered again. This rule could remove him from the current pool of modern-era candidates. Rivers, who last played in 2020 with the Colts, qualifies for the Class of 2026 because he has been away for four consecutive seasons. A return even for a single game would erase that retirement period and push his next eligibility window to at least the Class of 2031.

Complicating the situation is the difference between joining the active roster and signing to the practice squad. The Hall of Fame clarified that a practice-squad contract alone would not reset his retirement clock unless he is elevated to the active roster. While this could offer a temporary workaround for the Colts, who are dealing with season-ending injuries to Daniel Jones and ongoing issues with other quarterbacks, it would likely be a short-term measure before a promotion becomes necessary. That promotion, however, would immediately restart Rivers’ eligibility countdown.

Ultimately, Rivers must weigh his competitive desire against the timing of his Hall of Fame induction. His 17-year career places him among the most accomplished quarterbacks in league history, ranking seventh in career passing yards and sixth in passing touchdowns credentials that all but guarantee his eventual enshrinement. His upcoming decision will determine whether he delays that honor for another chance to play or preserves his current path toward Canton.
