127 people have
died in a stampede during a football match in Indonesia. 180 people have
been injured. The incident happened on Saturday night at the Kanjuruhan Stadium
in East Java.
A match was underway between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya in
Indonesia's BRI League-1. The Persian team
lost. The supporters of the losing team entered the field. The police had to
fire tear gas to stop them, leading to a stampede.
34 people died
in the stadium itself
Police said that 127 people,
including two police officers, were killed in the incident. The rest died in
hospital. A video of the incident has also surfaced, in which fans are seen
hurling objects at security personnel. The police resorted to lathi charge and
fired tear gas canisters to control the crowd. The Football Association of
Indonesia (PSSI) released a statement expressing its condolences over the
incident.
The PSI said that an
investigation will be conducted into what happened after the game and a team
has left for Malang for this. PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) chairman Ahmad
Hadian Lukita said that we are deeply saddened by the incident.
